Early Pioneers of magrath 1901
1901; Pioneers of Magrath (Spring Coulee), AB, Canada.
Thompson, Ezra Eugene & Ida Moon
In search of new opportunities, Ezra Thompson (48, no photo) and his wife, Ida Moon (no photo), brought their small family to Spring Coulee, 10 miles west of Magrath. They came from Nebraska, passing through California on the way, where Ida’s father had once mined for gold. They travelled with their 2 daughters. Three more children were born after they had arrived.
Ezra came to farm and to sell real estate. He constructed his headquarters out of slab boards some distance SW of the village, the location thereafter known as ‘Slabtown’. The family stayed put for a time, before moving to Brant, Alberta (about 90 miles north), where they prospered. Prior to 1910 they moved to California. Today, the Duncan Thompson family of Spring Coulee are descendants of Rezin Thompson, a younger brother of Ezra Eugene.
