Clue #1
Magrath was established in 1899, when pioneers from Utah and Idaho crossed the Canadian border and settled along the Pothole Creek. The town has grown and expanded in its 125 years, but the greatest attribute of the Garden City has always been the fabulous people who call it home. The first ever Museum Madness mystery rock has been hidden somewhere within Magrath and all the surrounding parks and trails that its citizens would call "home".
Clue #2
Ever gone for a wander around the town and its different walking trails? The trails are steeped with historical significance and markers that tell the tale of Magrath and its first inhabitants.
Clue #3
Reading historical works like “Our Town”, “Irrigation Builders”, or the newly published “Settlers of Magrath” will really help you hone in on the rock’s hidden location. As the clues get more specific, gleaning knowledge about Magrath’s history from family members and these narratives will be essential if you want to claim the prize.
Clue #4
Community has always been the central focus of Magrath. The July 24th celebrations are "emblematic" of this focus, and have continued to bring us all together year after year. Civic centers, both past and present, have always provided the citizens of our town with opportunities to continue to grow and expand our sense of community.
Clue #5
Extra, extra, read all about it! Think your generation is the "Zenith" of sports in Magrath? Think again! Rivalries have existed between Magrath, Raymond, Cardston, Taber, and Lethbridge, long before any of you were born! Yes, I'm even referring to you, Eldon Coleman! Take a look at the Magrath Pioneer, our first local newspaper, and learn about the news, fashion, and culture of the day. Maybe a few calls from May 3rd, 1911 Society and Sports sections will help refer you to the location of the rock.
Clue #6
Religion has always played a key role in Magrath's history. While Mormon settlers may have been the first to cultivate the area in 1899, followers of the Church of England, as well as Presbyterians and other Christians soon joined the community. In 1909, the original United church was erected and was replaced in 1947 by the building that houses the Mennonite church today. These interesting facts can be learned by exploring Magrath's Heritage Walk. Have you gotten your copy from the Magrath Museum yet? Well, if you have, the location of the Museum Madness rock is found between the dashed lines.
Clue #7
Great work everyone, your knowledge of the history of our town has grown drastically in just two days! Now try and imagine what it would have been like to live in Magrath 111 years ago. Who do you think knew these streets the best? Which individual would have known the names and addresses of Magrath's first families?
Clue #8
Remember, when the town's firehall siren used to ring out to declare curfew for all the kids running wild on the streets? Or how about the old school bell being rung each morning? The location of the bell has changed a few times over the years, but if you were standing beside the hidden rock today, you would deafinitely be able to hear the bell chime loud and clear.
Clue #9
Okay, so no one has found the rock yet. That is fine be me! Here is another clue: paced with history. If the rock could stay where it was but travel back in time to the 20th century, it would be located on a privately owned ten acre lot. A dedicatory rock was cemented in 1984 to honor the family who originally owned the lot, and whose patriarch was the first Postmaster of Magrath. 84 West 37 North.
Clue #10
Very clever, I know. Of all the town's many public spaces, this is perhaps the least well known of all, and it is located right under all our noses, just west of town hall. Maybe you should have a seat next to Marie Sabey, or enjoy lunch on the picnic table. Or maybe you should just rush to the park and win $1000!
Clue #11
Everyone who still needs one final clue, here it is. Reread all of the clues and circle the first letter of each. this will tell you the exact location of this year's mystery rock. Happy hunting!
