Picture
The Magrath Mirror Newspaper has been a real treat to scan into our records. It is filled with news, advertisements, comics, funny stories and advice columns. We are currently scanning in the years 1950-51. Come on in and see for yourself!

Sneak Peak!

6/7/2011

Here is a little sneak peak to some of the trivia questions that may be asked at the town celebration!

1. What was the first movie played in Magrath?
2. Who was the first Mayor, and who is the Mayor now?
3. Who is Magrath named after?

Beat the crowd and come on into the Museum for the answers to these questions, and even get further hints on more questions that will be asked!

As July has officially started it is now time to prepare for the Town Celebrations. It has been greatly debated which was better, Christmas or the Celebrations and to be quite honest it is a toss up for most people. It is a magical time of year!

This year at the Magrath Celebrations we will be having Trivia Questions throughout the 6-8 Town Program. ( Right after beef on a bun.) A preview to the questions and answers will be given through tours, the website, twitter and our facebook. Come on in and get a jump start on the answers! Prizes will be given to those who answer correctly first.

Olympics

2/7/2011

I stumbled across this article donated by Dr. Steele Brewerton. I did not know that we had had this opportunity in Magrath. I also appreciate the P.S note and found it quite witty. Give it a read and see if anyone remembers this trip.
Magrath Cardston Division Marching Band

Director: Boyd M Hunter

To: All Members of Band Parents Association.

From: Executive Committee.

Subject: Montreal Activities ( 1976 Olympiciad)

At a special general meeting of January 21, 1976, the parents present and the band executives discussed the possibility of going to Montreal, July 15-22/76. It was the feeling of the majority of the people that this would be a great opportunity for the band students. At this meeting we also decided each student would pay to Mrs. Sue Kado, treasurer, the sum of $10.00 minimum each month. ( Feb-July) Since then the following has been materialized:

1. We will be leaving Calgary at 10:40 A.M. July 15th and return to Calgary July 22nd at 5:30 P.M.

2. We will be playing Two sit-down concerts.

3. We will be doing an outdoor field show for 12,00 people.

4. One Street Parade.

5. We have been invited to participate at three Expo baseball games (which were internationally broadcasted.)

6. We will be visiting "Man and His World" on complimentary visas.

7. Our housing has been taken care of.

8. We are waiting invitations for opening of Olympic events.

9. We are arranging tickets for some Olympic events.

10. Bus tours will be taken of Historical important places.

We hope you feel this information gives you a little insight into the plans thus far. We will keep you informed on any further developments.

At this time, we the executives would like to thank each and every parent for all your assistance. We will not be able to carry on without the help of all the parents. Again, our sincere thanks to one and all.

P.S.

Parents: if you don't hear music instruments practicing in your home, please encourage them to produce some music for your ears as Mr. Hunter feels more practice at home is needed and is necessary to remain as the Top Band in competition.

Sincerely yours,

Band Executive.

Canada Day

30/6/2011

Tomorrow is Canada Day and what a day it is. Camping, hiking, visiting, eating, no matter how you choose to celebrate it, it is always a wonderful weekend. Come on in and stop by the Museum and see some history as you make your own. There is lots to read, view and explore!

For the kids we have words searches, scavenger hunts and people finders. For the adults we have stories and newspapers and so much more. All ages welcome :)

Mesquitos

29/6/2011

I have a strong disliking towards these creatures. What led me to blog about this unfortunate species is being a victim of them six times over while changing our closed sign to open this morning. It led me to wonder.....were they always this bad? How did they get rid of them, five, ten, fifteen, twenty or even fifty years ago? I have been trying to research it,however I am struggling finding any information. If anyone knows we would love to find out. Aside from that the Museum is in full swing, scanning yearbooks, typing histories, interviewing and much more. Come on in today and take a tour. Have some questions and we will answer them!

Enjoy summer.

Summer

27/6/2011

Summer is finally here and we have our new hours hammered out! Congratulations to the students of Magrath who are now finished with school and can come visit the museum. :)

Our new hours will start July 5 and run through August 12.

Monday - 4- 8 Open late for Family Night!
Tuesday- Friday 9- 6 Book a tour or just come on in!
Saturday 11-3 Have some free times with the kids- come learn about your roots!
Sundays- Closed

We are very excited and are also available to do after hour tours of the museum as well as cemetery tours upon request. Make us a part of your family reunion, summer afternoon, or anything for that matter. We wouldn't be here without citizens of Magrath. If you are seeking specific information on a tour or just in general give us a call and we will do our best to help.

Three cheers for summer!

New Displays

23/6/2011

We are now officially in the works of new displays. Two rooms will be rotated and the main room will have things we have never seen before.

Excellent.

While we will be in "construction" mode for a few days, come in and check it out through the process. We are working hard to be ready for the town celebrations. As for now, enjoy summer and make sure to stop by!

And We Are Back

20/6/2011

After a quick trip to the states by the summer student, namely myself, the museum will be back in full swing.

HERE IS WHY.

Soon we will have two employees ( July 1st weekend) which means that the museum will be open a bit longer making history more available to you. What is not to be excited about?

The float planning is beginning and I couldn't be more thrilled. Hold on to your hats ladies and gentlemen because it is going to be great this year. One word....popcorn. That is all you get.

Here is where we need all citizens of Magrath to step in. We have lots of personal histories here. They are my very favourite part of working here, as it defines the roots of Magrath. However, we are missing lots of families and we need your help. If you have journal entries, funny stories,  memories of main street, or even photos from your ancestors of Magrath please BRING IT IN. Often times we have out of town visitors on genealogy trips looking for these very things. Help us represent you properly.
